Inter and Milan have presented the project of the new stadium that will replace the historic "San Siro" facility.
The stadium will be named "Generali Stadium", after the Italian insurance company that will be its sponsor. It will have a capacity of 71,500 spectators, while the joint investment of the two clubs is expected to be around 1.2 billion euros.
The project was presented on Thursday during a gala evening at the Castello Sforzesco castle in Milan. According to the approved plan, construction is expected to start in 2028, in the area where the San Siro is currently located, while the new stadium is intended to be ready for the 2031-2032 football season.
Despite the presentation of the project, the idea of replacing the historic stadium has met with opposition from some fans. Outside the event, a group of Inter supporters protested against the demolition of the “San Siro”, unfurling a banner with the inscription: “You will never be able to turn off the lights of San Siro”. The protesters also expressed their dissatisfaction through calls against the project.
Architect Norman Foster, involved in the design of the facility, announced that the stadium will have a unique architecture, with a lower central section and a structure rising on both sides behind the goals. The stands will be placed very close to the pitch, with the aim of creating a closer and more intense atmosphere between players and fans.
The stadium will not only serve football. The project envisages that the facility will also be suitable for NFL and rugby matches, as well as for organizing music concerts.
To make the project a reality, Inter and Milan have paid 197 million euros to buy the current San Siro stadium and the surrounding parking spaces. With the completion of the new facility, the existing stadium is expected to be largely demolished.
The San Siro, also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, was inaugurated in 1926 and is the stadium with the largest capacity in Italy. For decades, it has been one of the symbols of Italian and European football, but the need to modernize and adapt to new standards has led to the decision to build a new facility.
