French football star Kylian Mbappe has apologised for an "inappropriate" comment that caused discontent in China.
As he stressed, referring to a comment he made about Mao Zedong, whom he called a “dictator,” this was not done “intentionally to cause concern.” Moreover, he expressed “deep respect” for the Chinese people.
Earlier on Tuesday, two Chinese companies announced they were ending their collaboration with him after a video was published online in which the French soccer superstar referred to the former leader of China and founder of its People's Republic, who died in 1976.
"We are ending all cooperation with Mbappe. Our company categorically opposes and implements a zero-tolerance policy towards any behavior that offends national sentiments," Dongpeng, one of China's largest beverage manufacturers, said in a statement.
Advertisements featuring the 27-year-old captain of the French national team, created using artificial intelligence, drinking Dongpeng soft drink, appeared frequently in China during this year's World Cup.
Mengniu, China's largest dairy company, also announced today that it has ended its partnership with the Real Madrid striker.
Until this particular incident, Mbappe was extremely popular with Chinese fans and had millions of followers on social media.
