The next local elections in Albania will be held on May 9, 2027. The President of the Republic has decreed this Friday the date for the election of mayors and members of municipal councils.
The decision was made after consultations with representatives of political parties and the State Election Commissioner, in accordance with the deadlines set by the Electoral Code.
According to the Presidency's announcement, only representatives of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, the Social Democratic Party, and the State Election Commissioner participated in the consultations.
Other political parties, including the opposition, did not respond to the President's invitation and did not publicly present any preference for the election date.
During consultations, the State Election Commissioner proposed the date of May 9, arguing that this choice gives institutions more time to prepare and organize the electoral process.
The Social Democratic Party also expressed its preference for this date, while representatives involved in the consultations were open to the proposed alternatives.
According to the Electoral Code, local elections must be held during the spring election period, which includes four Sundays between April 15 and May 15.
