Anxiety and depression/ The number of people hospitalized in psychiatry

Mental disorders are progressing faster in the Albanian population, but the phenomenon experienced rapid growth after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Official data from the Ministry of Health show that in the first 4 months of this year, the number of people hospitalized in psychiatric wards increased by about 50%, reaching 1122 patients from 749 in the first 4 months of 2022.

Beds also increased in other hospital services. In the first 4 months, about 99,500 people were hospitalized with an annual increase of 15%. The activities of public hospitals have increased for all services, the data show.

As the burden of disease is increasing in the population due to aging populations and lifestyles, some services are seen to be lacking in both staffing and facilities. Hospital services for mental illness and heart disease are also in such a situation.

Albania has a low number of doctors per population, but the number of psychiatrists is very low in relation to the needs.

Psychiatrists estimate that the prevalence of mental illnesses in the population is higher than official reports, as there is low under-diagnosis due to the low culture that the population has to accept the disease.

Earlier, the psychiatrists of the psychiatric hospital at QSUT claimed for Monitor that this tendency always appears in psychiatric hospitals, the number of patients sometimes decreases and increases. This is because some chronic patients hospitalized in psychiatry who finish the medication, return again for admissions, as their condition worsens due to the use of narcotic substances.

Despite the fact that anxiety is not treated or treated by psychiatric hospitals, polyclinic doctors claim that the cases of patients suffering from anxiety during this period are on the rise compared to years.

Psychiatrist Arjan Rreli at the Community Mental Health Center No. 3 in Tirana said that after the 2019 earthquake event and the Covid-19 pandemic, there is an increasing trend of patients with signs of anxiety and depression.

Psychiatrist Rreli pointed out that the many events in the country, including accidents with loss of life or murders, broadcast by the media, but also conveyed by other information technology models, are negatively affecting the increase of these patients, causing anxiety and uncertainty.

Another factor in the increase in patients with anxiety, the psychiatrist singled out the rapid change in temperatures.

The Covid-19 pandemic, among the most severe symptoms it left behind was mental health. The World Health Organization has called for the increase of capacities in health for the treatment of mental problems.

Stress, depression and mental illness in general were stimulated by some unforeseen events in the last year. First the earthquake of 2019, then the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and then the high prices have created mental instability and worsened the situation of those prone to depression.

After a stabilization in 2022, the number of patients in the psychiatric hospital returned to growth. Doctors claim that patients neglect symptoms and treatment with medications until they are in a serious condition that requires hospital treatment.

One of the largest studies conducted (so far) on the mental effects of Covid-19 has found that people who recover from the virus end up suffering from psychiatric or neurological problems up to six months later.

The study published in the journal "Lancet Psychiatry" looked at the health records of over 23,000 patients who had recovered from Covid-19 and found that 34% of them had neurological or psychiatric problems within six months. /MONITOR
