Mikael Svatos, 27, and Ana Kosinova, 36, had come to Albania for tourism, not knowing that this would be their last trip. It was July 3, 2015. The two young people from the Czech Republic were returning from Dukagjini to Shkodër by car, when Sokol Mjacaj, then 20 years old, ran into them. He had a Kalashnikov with him and at gunpoint he got into their car to rob them.
He asked them to give him the money, but the two foreigners did not understand. Terrified by the armed robber, they tried in every way to escape. As the killer Mjacaj himself would confess, Mikaeli braked the car hard in order to crash it and when Mjacaj asked them to stop in a wooded area, the 27-year-old tried to take his gun. The girl cried and screamed all the way. Unfortunately, just like in a horror movie, none of the attempts of the two tourists were successful.
"Yes, I killed them. I wanted to rob them, but they opposed me. I rode in Lotaj. When I saw them getting ready to move the car, I followed them and pointed my gun at them. I opened the back door and told them to go… It irritated me that he turned back several times to get the gun. At first I didn't want to kill them, I just wanted to rob them, take the car and run away. But the boy braked hard, he wanted to hit me. Then he wanted to take my gun," he confessed at the time.
Irritated by their resistance, Mjacaj executed both of them with firearms. Still convinced of his intention to rob them, after killing them he wanted to take their car. But even this plan failed as the SUV crashed. Mjacaj left the crime scene with only one of the victims' phones, the one he liked. This phone, which he sold to a fellow villager, led the police to track down Mjacaj. 48 hours later he was arrested in a house in the village of Grudë e Re.
At the time of his arrest, he showed no sign of remorse. The only regret he had was not being able to carry out the plan to get the car. Probably in an attempt to escape life imprisonment, he would show remorse for the event a few months later.
In November 2015, he appeared in the courtroom in tears. He apologized to the families of the victims and asked for mercy from the jury. He said that he had not wanted to kill them, but only to rob them.
His tears did not convince the jury. A few days later, on November 16, 2015, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The court of Shkodra rejected the request for summary judgment, as well as the request for psychological examination.
Attempts to escape life imprisonment did not remain only in that courtroom. Sokol Mjacaj appealed to all levels of the judiciary. They all knocked him down. In 2022, he was overthrown by the Supreme Court as well as by the Constitutional Court.
The murder of Mikael and Ana was not the first.
His "career" as a robber and murderer had started at a very young age. He was only 15 years old when, together with two other people, they tried to take the pendant from a 13-year-old boy. When the latter resisted, they killed him and threw his body into the river.
He was initially sentenced to 10 years in prison, but the appeal decided to reduce this sentence to 5 years, since Mjacaj cooperated with the justice by confessing the whole incident. He killed the two Czech tourists when he was just released from prison.
Today, Sokol Mjacaj killed Arben Lleshi. This time he committed the murder inside Peqin prison, where he and the victim were serving their sentence.
