15 years since the killing of 4 protesters in front of the Prime Minister's

Today marks 15 years since January 21, 2011, when during a Socialist Party protest, on "Martyrs of the Nation" Boulevard, in front of the Prime Minister's Office, four protesters were killed by the Republican Guard.

Akeks Nika, Ziver Veizit, Faik Myrtaj and Hekuran Deda were killed during the protest. The four victims of January 21, 2011 were declared Martyrs of the Homeland.

In July of last year, the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) officially launched investigations into January 21, after the Strasbourg Court ordered the Special Structure to investigate the complaint made by Rajmonda Nika, the wife of Aleks Nika, against Sali Berisha, former Prime Minister, Lulzim Basha, former Minister of Interior, and Ndrea Prendit, former head of the Republican Guard.

The Strasbourg court has described the killing of the four protesters as a "state crime that had to be solved."

Prime Minister Edi Rama remembered "January 21" today and in a post on social media, Rama writes that even 15 years after what he calls a state crime, the four victims cannot find peace because justice has not been served.

"GOOD MORNING and today, on the 15th anniversary of an unprecedented state crime in the history of the new Albanian democracy, when four murdered people still cannot rest in peace and justice resembles a turtle praying for oblivion, with the conviction that no matter how late justice is, it will not forget on January 21, I wish you all a good day," Rama writes.
