Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi has declared that he will be acquitted at the end of the trial in The Hague.
"I want to shake each of you's hands, hug you all, and assure you that I will come out with every cell of me pure as a tear at the end of this journey, which continues with you and for you," he writes.
Today marks six years since the former President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, and the former Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly, Kadri Veseli, were sent to The Hague after the indictment was confirmed by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers.
Thaçi, Veseli, Selimi and Krasniqi were transferred to the Kosovo Specialist Chambers detention facility in The Hague on 4 and 5 November 2020. All four pleaded not guilty to all counts of the indictment in their appearances.
The trial in the Special Court against them began on April 3, 2023.
Meanwhile, on September 16 of this year, the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague announced the first-instance verdict against four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
Thaçi and Krasniqi were sentenced to 25 years in prison each, Kadri Veseli to 18 years and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years.
The four were found guilty of so-called war crimes committed during the recent war in Kosovo, including unlawful or arbitrary detention, cruel treatment, torture and murder. The four were acquitted of charges of crimes against humanity.
