After intensive and months-long work on the format of the World Cup, FIFA is now ready to approve the development of the event with 48 teams. This is expected to happen from the 2026 edition, which will take place in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The expanded event will have 104 matches, compared to the 64 matches played at Qatar 2022, which featured only 32 representative teams. The decision seems very close to officialization, which is expected to come in the following hours, at the meeting of the Governing Council in Kigali, Rwanda.

According to the English media, the development of the World Cup in the 48-team format will be accompanied by changes in the way the event is organized. Although it was rumored that the tournament could be held with 16 groups of 3 teams, in reality it is expected that the format will be adopted closer to the traditional one, with 12 groups, in which 4 teams will play.

In that case, in addition to the winning teams and the second-placed teams, the best 8 third-placed teams would also qualify. The stage after the groups would be that of the 1st of 16. In short, the 2026 World Cup will take place in a more competitive phase. The expansion of the event would bring additional benefits to FIFA, estimated at between 10 and 12.5 million euros.
