A Slovenian will referee the World Cup final

Slovenian Slavko Vin?i? has been appointed by FIFA as the main referee of the 2026 World Cup final, where Argentina and Spain will face off on July 19. The appointment of the 46-year-old from Maribor to this role constitutes a historic moment, as he becomes the first Slovenian referee to officiate a World Cup final and the 23rd person in history to take on this responsibility.

Vin?i? described the news as an overwhelming emotion, saying he was initially stunned when he received the call from FIFA's director of refereeing and chairman of the Referees' Committee, Pierluigi Collina. He said that every referee's biggest dream is to referee a World Cup final and that he feels extremely proud of this achievement.

The Slovenian referee stressed that this success does not belong only to him, but to the entire refereeing team. He thanked in particular his assistants, Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kova?i?, with whom he has collaborated for many years. According to Vin?i?, refereeing is a team work and without their support it would not have been possible to reach the final of the biggest football competition.

Vin?i?'s career is filled with important international matches. He has refereed the 2020 European Championship, the 2022 Europa League final between Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers, and the 2024 Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. He also refereed the Euro 2024 semi-final between France and Spain and also refereed matches at the 2025 Club World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup is his second World Cup officiating, having refereed two matches in Qatar 2022. In this edition of the World Cup, Vin?i? refereed the Brazil-Morocco and Jordan-Algeria group stage matches, as well as the Mexico-Ecuador match in the round of 32. His consistent performances throughout the tournament convinced the FIFA Referees Committee to entrust him with the final.

Pierluigi Collina explained that the selection of the referee for the final is the result of a long evaluation process, with the main factor being the level of performances during the tournament. He stressed that each match is carefully analysed and only the referee who demonstrates the highest quality earns the right to officiate the final. In the final between Argentina and Spain, Jordanian Adham Makhadmeh will be the fourth official, while Mohammad Al-Khalaf will serve as the reserve assistant.

Ahead of the decisive challenge, Vin?i? said that he will not change the way he prepares. He and his team will carefully analyze both teams, focus on the physical and mental aspects, and their goal will be to not be part of the discussions after the final, but to focus only on football and the winner of the 2026 World Cup.
