France is the new Brazil, 4 finals in 7 editions: Mbappe passed Pelé,
France

24 years ago, with the first success in the World Cup organized at home, France began to dominate international football. Then, Les Bleus prevailed 3-0 against Brazil. Looking ahead to the final against Argentina and taking a look at Deschamps' squad, it looks like this dominance could last for many years to come. Four finals in the last seven editions of the World Cup (1998, 2006, 2018 and 2022).

It seems that on that night in Paris in 1998, France stripped Brazil of the role of national queen.

That night, Didier Deschamps was also on the field, with the captain's armband on his arm. Thanks to the success against Morocco, he became the fourth coach capable of going to two consecutive World Cup finals. The achievement was previously achieved by Vittorio Pozzo (with Italy, 1934 and 1938). It took over 50 years for history to repeat itself with Carlos Bilardo (with Argentina, 1986 and 1990) and Franz Beckenbauer (with Germany, 1986 and 1990). Deschamps now aims for the record of the Italian coach, the only one to win both finals.

The former Juventus midfielder, winning against Argentina, would reach two more legends like Pelé. The Brazilian legend has won 3 as a player, Zagallo two as a player and one as a coach. If Deschamps succeeds, he would make 3: two as a coach and one as a player.

RECORDS SET AND THOSE IN PLAY…

However, there is someone in France who has already surpassed the legend of Pele. Kylian Mbappé in Qatar has become the player who at the age of 24 has scored more goals in a World Cup. The Frenchman has scored 9 against the Brazilian's 7. The striker can now aim for Miroslav Klose's record, the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup with 16 goals.

Of course, the record Mbappe is most interested in is still Pele's. The Brazilian is the only player, at least until Sunday, capable of winning two World Cups at the age of 24.

Speaking of records, it is also understandable the very close connection that seems to exist between France 1998 and today.

The Thuram family deserves a special mention. Lilian (twice, in '98 and in 2006) and Marcus are actually the first father-son duo in history to reach the World Cup final. In the event of a French victory, they would undoubtedly be the only father-son duo to be declared world champions.
