The women's 66kg boxing duel between Italian Angela Carini and Algerian Imane Khelif that lasted only 45 seconds has caused much controversy, as Khelif is suspected to be "biologically male".
Many were the reactions to Khelif's victory, demanding that she not compete in the women's disciplines.
But the reaction of the Algerian Olympic Committee was immediate, explaining that these are nothing but malicious attacks and attempts at slander and lies by foreign media.
"The Algerian Olympic Committee condemns in the strongest terms the malicious and unethical attacks directed against our outstanding athlete, Imane Khelif, by some foreign media. These attempts at defamation, based on lies, are completely unjustified, especially at a crucial moment in which she is, preparing for the Olympic Games, the pinnacle of her career," writes KOA at the beginning.
"We have taken all the necessary measures to protect our champion. Imane Khelif perfectly embodies the spirit of excellence, determination and endurance of our athletes. Despite these unfounded criticisms, we have unwavering faith in her abilities and we are convinced that she will shine at the Olympic Games." "We are all with you, Imane," the note continued.
"The whole nation supports you, proud of your achievements and the honor you bring to Algeria. Let's focus on your incredible talent and hard work to represent our country on the world stage. We ask everyone to support our champion, Imane, whose level of excellence worries some people," concludes KOA.
