Two people fall into the Seine River and die during PSG celebrations

The celebrations turned into tragedy. This weekend, two people died after falling into the Seine River during celebrations of PSG's Champions League victory.

The Paris prosecutor's office announced this in a new report on Tuesday evening. On Saturday, at around 9 pm, police were informed that "a person in cardiac arrest had fallen into the Seine" at the forts in the 5th arrondissement.

Witnesses reported that "the person deliberately jumped into the Seine before drowning." A team from the fire department's river brigade recovered the victim's body.

“Despite the care provided by the Hôtel-Dieu emergency medical service, the victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition, with a very life-threatening prognosis.”

On Tuesday, the Paris prosecutor's office "was informed of the death of the victim, who was born in Rwanda in 1997." An investigation into the cause of death has been entrusted to the police station of the 5th and 6th arrondissements.

On Sunday morning, a man was also found in the Seine near the Louis-Philippe bridge. According to a call to emergency services (17), he reportedly fell into the water near the Pont-au-Change. 

"Despite the intervention of the emergency medical services (SAMU), he could not be resuscitated. An investigation into the cause of death has been opened," the public prosecutor's office said.

Riots during the celebrations for PSG's Champions League victory were more pronounced than last year (a 45% increase). Another person died in a motorbike accident on the ring road between Saturday night and Sunday. In total, more than 890 arrests were made.
