Marios Oikonomou does not make it: Motorcycle accident takes his life at the age of 33

The football world, both in Greece and Italy, has been shocked by the bitter news of the untimely death of Marios Oikonomou. The former Greek defender, who had also made his mark in Serie A, passed away at the age of 33 after the fatal consequences of a serious motorcycle accident.

Oikonomou, born on October 6, 1992, was involved in a tragic accident on May 23 in his hometown of Ioannina. The accident, which occurred at around 12:50 p.m., involved his motorcycle colliding with a car. As a result of the forceful impact, the former footballer suffered serious head injuries.

Immediately after the accident, Oikonomou received first aid at the scene and was then urgently transferred to the University Polyclinic of Ioannina. There, he underwent a delicate neurosurgical intervention in an attempt to save his life. However, his condition remained extremely critical throughout the days of hospitalization.

For nine days, Marios Oikonomou remained in intensive care, intubated, while doctors carefully monitored the evolution of his neurological condition. Even after the start of brain function tests in the last hours, the situation never showed signs of improvement, until the painful news of his death, communicated today in Greece.

His loss has deeply affected PAS Ioannina, where Oikonomou grew up as a footballer. The club remembered him with a heartfelt message, describing him as “a boy who had earned the love and respect of everyone.” In a statement, the club expressed its condolences to his family and his father, Giorgos, a figure linked to society.

Who was Marios Oikonomou?

Marios Oikonomou's career was rich and built between Greece and Italy. After starting with PAS Ioannina, in 2013 he arrived in Italy at Cagliari. However, the most significant stage was at Bologna, where he played in both Serie B and Serie A, becoming one of the protagonists of the team's promotion to the maximum category. In Italy, he also wore the jerseys of SPAL, Bari and Sampdoria, before having experiences with AEK Athens, Copenhagen and Panetolikos, the club with which he ended his career in 2024. With the Greek national team he recorded 6 appearances, after his debut in 2016. His death comes almost two years after his retirement from playing football, leaving behind a deep memory in the hearts of his teammates and fans.
