One of the most sensational transfers of the January market was that of Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea, for a record amount of 120 million euros.
Benfica insisted that Enzo is not for sale, but Chelsea offered the price of the player's release clause, forcing the latter to allow the Argentina World Cup-winning star to leave.
Chelsea bosses worked hard to reach an agreement in the last moments of the January transfer window, while it is understood that the talks between the two clubs were about to produce something unsportsmanlike.
"Record" made it known that the heads of Chelsea and those of Benfica escalated to the point where they were very close to fighting physically over the deal for Enzo.
An operation that the president of the Eagles, Manuel Rui Costa, has commented on with slightly harsh words in an interview given to Bei Portugal.
Benfica's president said last night that his wish was for Enzo to stay, but that the Argentine was only thinking about moving to Chelsea.
"From the moment he realized that they would pay the clause, Enzo has been impatient. We insisted, but he showed no sign that he wanted to continue at Benfica.
I proposed to Chelsea to let him stay with us until the summer and then take him for a lower price. The footballer, even after this proposal, did not want to continue at Benfica", explained Rui Costa.
"And it was here that everything changed. A player who, even with the possibility of not losing a single euro and a secure contract with Chelsea, would not stay, could not continue to play at Benfica. Enzo Fernandez would no longer be able to enter the dressing room."
And still: "I was hoping that he wanted to fight with us for the title. When I realized that he didn't want to, I didn't even want him to wear the Benfica jersey again."
"At Benfica, and this also applies to the age groups, there are only proud players who wear the Benfica shirt. I'm sad, but I won't shed tears for a player who didn't want to stay."
