Barcelona secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals without a hitch. The Catalans won 7-2 at Camp Nou in the second leg against Newcastle, overturning the 1-1 draw that the Magpies had managed to hold them at St James' Park in the first leg. Goals from Raphinha, Bernal, Yamal, Fermin and Lewandowski sealed the tie, while Elanga's brace was not enough for the English. Flick's team will face Atletico Madrid or Tottenham in the next round.
After a 1-1 draw in the first leg on English soil, Barcelona and Newcastle returned to face each other at Camp Nou, where the Blaugrana opened the scoring in the 6th minute: Yamal brought down Thiaw with a quick move, Fermin provided the assist and Raphinha beat Ramsdale. The Magpies suffered and reacted immediately: Hall punished the usually very high Barça defence and gave Elanga the ball, which the Swede converted to make it 1-1 in the 15th minute. Three minutes passed and the home team regained the lead: Newcastle were caught off guard by a free kick from Raphinha and Bernal scored for 2-1 in the 18th minute. This time, Howe's team responded in the 28th minute, with Barnes and Elanga scoring twice.
In the long extra time of the first half, Yamal scores for 3-2 from the penalty spot, before Newcastle's complete collapse at the start of the second half: between minutes 52' and 61' Culers break away with a goal from Fermin and a double from Lewandowski. The Pole thus comes in the best form, unfortunately for the technician Sylvinho, for the match on March 26 against Albania, in the 2026 World Cup playoff.
Raphinha then added the final 7-2 in the 72nd minute, turning what seemed like a dream evening until the break for the English into a nightmare.
To make matters worse for Newcastle, Tonali is out due to injury, which should also be considered in Italy's interest: the Italian player suffers a thigh injury and is substituted. Flick is happy, however, as his team enjoys a brilliant second half and flies into the quarter-finals.
