Prime Minister Edi Rama held a hearing with the citizens of Tirana, more specifically with the residents of Administrative Unit No. 3. The head of government also mentioned the situation in Tirana following the arrest of the mayor, Erion Veliaj.

He also explained to the citizens the reasons why the dismissal of Erion Veliaj and the opening of elections in the capital were requested.

According to Rama, everything happened after Veliaj lost the trial in all three levels to be tried at large. Rama said that citizens have the right to be governed by their chosen one and this is the reason why they demanded elections.

"At all levels where the mayor requested reinstatement and investigation while free, he lost the trial and when all levels were exhausted, it was the most normal thing to think about the city, to think about the people that they also have a very important fundamental right. The right to be governed by their elected representatives. This was the reason why we took the next step to pave the way for elections in the Municipality of Tirana. It was not a step to blame the mayor, nor a step related to the fact that the mayor was absent from duty because he had his own reasons. It was a step related to the fact that the mayor, unable to perform his duties, would not become an increasingly big problem for the city," he said.

Regarding the Constitutional Court's decision, Rama said that the socialist majority respects it, but stressed that it should be the one to reinstate Veliaj, now that he made the decision to annul the partial local elections.

"It is a court decision, there is no question that we respect it, and I have no reason to believe that the Constitutional Court has played politics in this case. I have reason to believe that the Constitutional Court has thought differently, but the different opinion of the Constitutional Court leads to the conclusion that when the mayor goes there to request to be returned to office, the Constitutional Court should return him to office because it itself has said that elections cannot be held in Tirana because he is the elected one. Then it should return him to office in order to normalize a situation that is becoming more difficult every day for the capital," said Rama.
