The chairman of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party, Gazment Bardhi, has reacted after the statement of the European Union Ambassador, Silvio Gonzato, accusing the diplomat that anyone who speaks about the presumption of innocence, without emphasizing Albania's need for equality of all before the law, becomes simply a spokesperson for government corruption.
"In these years of transition, Albania has not suffered from disrespect for the principle of the presumption of innocence, but from the permanent violation of the principle of equality before the law, where some have had and continue to have the certificate of 'untouchable persons'," Bardhi writes on social networks.
According to him, the fight against impunity, and not the principle of the presumption of innocence, was the major objective of the Justice Reform in Albania.
"For anyone who does not want to be identified as a spokesperson for Belinda Balluku's corruption, it is enough to remind them of the simple fact that she was investigated by SPAK, and the latter has taken her into custody, because she has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that in the procurement procedure for the Llogara Tunnel, worth 190 million euros, the winner was predetermined and the equality of participants in public tenders was violated."
This, according to Bardhi, also constitutes a clear violation of the EU-Albania SAA.
"Pre-determined Turkish businesses without competition are rapidly replacing serious European investors, thus openly violating the SAA and the obligations that Albania has within the framework of the European integration process."
He continued by saying that "Edi Rama and anyone else who defends the deputy prime minister accused of corruption and comes out as Belinda Balluku's spokesperson, should remember that equality before the law is the foundation of a European and democratic society."
Bardhi emphasizes that Balluku cannot use executive power to intimidate witnesses, destroy evidence, or corrupt.
"She must face justice without the trappings of power as the number 2 of the Albanian Government and respecting the principle of equality before the law. Keeping her in the position of Deputy Prime Minister and minister is a political shield from justice and a clear form of political pressure on the prosecution," Bardhi concluded.
