The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has reacted harshly to the situation of the fires that have engulfed the country, calling it an "out-of-control national emergency."
He said that in the last two days, Albania has experienced the most severe damage from fires in its history, with thousands of hectares of forests, pastures and fruit trees burned, dozens of houses destroyed, livestock lost and victims.
According to Berisha, citizens from south to north have been left unprotected by the state, while areas such as Delvina, Fushë-Arrëzi and Gramshi are surrounded by flames.
He accused the government of using the armed forces and police to seize journalists' equipment instead of mobilizing to put out the fires and protect the population.
Berisha claimed that army vehicles are not being used for evacuations, but for "looting" media equipment.
He accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of "lack of responsibility" and waste of funds, citing "21 million euros spent on charter trips, 7 million euros for the Giro d'Italia."
According to him, these funds would be enough to purchase firefighting aircraft and dozens of new emergency vehicles, while currently only equipment purchased 15-20 years ago is being used.
