At the beginning of his speech on the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Socialist Party in Korça, Prime Minister Edi Rama brought to attention May 26, 1996. He said that at that time the Socialist Party faced a brutal regime, where even the election results were violated.
"A great coincidence brought together a date, May 26. Two significant moments of the SP. May 26, 1996, where the socialists faced the fury of violence and brutality, which put Albania in front of the real challenge of building democracy and placed the SP in an extremely dramatic situation. Those who were on the front line were violated, just as the result of those elections that were robbed by the degraded power of the DP was violated.
That May 26th is unimaginable today. The opposition was regularly violated. Albania at that time had only one screen, the RTSH screen, and the opposition was never shown on that screen, except in some cases with footage that covered the negative commentary of the news anchor.
"Albania at that time had only one opposition newspaper, and it was reduced to ashes by what was truly a brutal regime," Rama recalled, emphasizing that 30 years later, the Socialist Party brought Albania closer to the European Union.
"May 26, a few days ago, where the Socialist Party took Albania one step higher, to the peak that we have inherited from our ancestors, and the debt we owe to our children, where the home of the United Europe is located. We will decide with the flag of Ismail Qemali and Gjergj Kastrioti."
The Socialist Party has proven that it is the only political force to have a fair relationship with the national interest. Today, we have raised the heads of every Albanian everywhere in the world and we have given Albania a different sound to its name.
Today Albania is in another phase, as we have closed the group chapters related to negotiations with the EU.
