The British Foreign Minister, James Cleverly stated today that he had a "very frank" conversation with the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama after the statements of the Minister of the Interior Suella Braverman on the number of Albanian immigrants trying to reach the United Kingdom.
Rama accused Braverman of "discriminating" against his countrymen to distract from her own policy failures after she raised the issue in the House of Commons earlier this week, saying "the UK was suffering an invasion".
Speaking from a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Germany, Cleverly told the PA news agency that they had discussed the issue when he spoke with Rama.
"We talked about the things that the Home Secretary talked about. Which is the very, very significant number of Albanians who risk themselves in the hands of traffickers. Of course we have discussed the situation and the conversations that have been made on both sides and the statements that have been made on both sides.
The conclusion is that I and the Prime Minister had a very good conversation, a very friendly conversation and because we have a very good working relationship, he and I had a sincere conversation," he said.
Earlier, Downing Street insisted that migrants "deserve to be treated with compassion and respect".
