Monsignor Angelo Massafra has made a strong appeal regarding the mass emigration of Albanians abroad.

He said that a way must be found to put a stop to this phenomenon, stressing that behind every person or family that tries to emigrate there is the risk of human trafficking and their use for criminal purposes.

" Assessing the serious situation we are in, we have decided not to remain silent, raising our voice so that it can be heard by the competent state bodies and by our people. This is done in order to find a way to put a stop to this phenomenon, which, in some cases, also appears in illegal forms, forms behind which tragic cases are also hidden. Behind every person or family that tries to emigrate, there is a risk of human trafficking by various structured criminal groups and their use for criminal purposes abroad ," he said.

Full statement:

We, the Bishops of Albania, gathered in the ordinary Assembly of the Bishops' Conference, held in Tirana on October 25-26, 2022, among the most interesting arguments that belong to the Catholic Church and our beloved Albanian people, have also addressed the painful problem of the depopulation that is being caused in a dramatic way to our country.

Assessing the serious situation in which we find ourselves, we have decided not to remain silent, raising our voice so that it can be heard by the competent state bodies and by our people. This is done in order to find a way to put a stop to this phenomenon, which, in some cases, also appears in illegal forms, forms behind which tragic cases are also hidden. Behind every person or family that tries to emigrate, there is the risk of human trafficking by various structured criminal groups and their use for criminal purposes abroad.

The situation is clear in everyone's eyes. This is confirmed by the pastoral work of the sisters and priests, as well as listening to our believers, who dramatically tell us how entire families prefer to emigrate for fear that they cannot guarantee a safe future for their children. and that many of them have lost hope of living in Albania. In this way, we have a total emptying of school structures in rural areas (that is, a future without young people) and the lack of what can be called the most valuable professions for the social and economic development of our country, such as health personnel, education and various professions.

Through this ACT OF DENUNCIATION, we address above all the political class of the country so that this problem is treated with the greatest priority. Seeing such a dramatic situation, we come to ask: Who will be left with the place left empty by the emigrating Albanians? Who are we handing this land over to? What is the project for the future of this country? All this wealth that is found on this earth, in whose hands will it be? If we are a democracy, we should not be afraid to answer these fair and legitimate questions of our citizens with courage.

It is more than evident the need to undertake fair policies and coordinate all the country's social factors, for a dialogue that brings the right solutions. For our part, as the Catholic Church, we express our full readiness to contribute to this dialogue as an intermediary between state bodies. Also, we are ready to disclose suggestions and projects for this purpose.

In the end, we are aware that the responsibilities are not only those who lead the country, we urge all Albanians for a deep examination of conscience to understand that the fate of our country depends on the heart and mind of everyone.

We are all co-responsible, each according to the part that belongs to him, in the positive or negative functioning of the social life of Albania. No one can delegate their future to a political system or the illusion of a better life elsewhere.

Today, as we commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the first Mass and on the Vigil of the Martyrs' Feast of Albania, we propose their example of love for the homeland as the model to follow and imitate. Precisely the love for God and the homeland, which was the place where the divine test decided them to live and act, giving their contribution in collaboration with the work of the Creator, led them to give their lives.

We entrust all of them with intercession with God, whose blessing we invoke for this people that we love with sincere and unconditional love.
