"We are concerned"/ The closure of the Turkish college, the Council of
Rama-Erdogan

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has reacted to the decision of the Albanian government to close two Turkish educational institutions of "Turgut Ozal", that of "Mehmet Akif" college and that of "Zubeyde Hanim" kindergarten.

In the official reaction of the Council of Europe, it is emphasized that lawyers, academics and civil society have evaluated it as an arbitrary decision of the Albanian government due to the pressure of the Turkish authorities.

It is further said that Erdogan has been asking the Albanian authorities for 7 years to close the Albanian institutions that are embarrassing for his government.

The Council of Europe declares that they are concerned that Albania, as a candidate country for the EU, does not respect the rule of law by deciding politically under external pressure.

Feedback:

On September 22, 2022, the Albanian government canceled two Turkish educational institutions due to an alleged displacement procedure. This closure was evaluated by lawyers, academics and civil society as an arbitrary decision of the Albanian government due to the pressure of the Turkish authorities.

For more than seven years, Turkish foreign policy has made it its mission to shut down educational institutions perceived as embarrassing to the Erdogan government. The Turkish president used the weight of his office to contact Albanian authorities and other governments demanding the closure of schools founded by a certain group of Turkish citizens who were in opposition. These attempts to close schools were often followed by illegal abductions and extraditions. Cases of kidnapping of Turkish teachers have occurred in the same scenario in the Republic of Moldova (see Doc. 14649 “Call of the Republic of Moldova to restore the rule of law”) and have led to the condemnation of the country by the European Court of Human Rights . We are concerned that Albania, as a candidate country for the EU,

The Parliamentary Assembly should follow this case and call on Albania to respect the rule of law.
