The majority made official today as a candidate for the new president, the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General, Bajram Begaj.

The majority has enough votes to elect him as the new head of state in tomorrow's session, but before I go to the polls, his name is in the hands of President Ilir Meta.

Bajram Begaj currently holds the post of Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces and without being relieved of this duty he is barred from running for the post of President of the Republic.

His dismissal is in the hands of the current president Ilir Meta, as defined by point 3 of article 169 in the Constitution of the Republic of Albania.

"The President of the Republic, on the proposal of the Prime Minister, appoints and dismisses the Chief of General Staff, and, on the proposal of the Minister of Defense, appoints and dismisses the commanders of the land, naval and air forces," the Constitution states.

In addition, President Ilir Meta should release Bajram Begaj and from the rank of Major General to a general on release, so that he has the opportunity to run for President and be voted tomorrow in the Assembly.

If President Ilir Meta does not take these steps, according to the law, Bajram Begaj is not allowed to run for the post of head of state.

If it is resolved without Meta's decree, the election of the President will enter into a constitutional problem and it will be the Constitutional Court that will decide.
