It has long been said that 10,000 steps a day is the magic number needed to stay fit and healthy.
But a new study shows that as little as 5,000 may be enough to see a benefit.
Analysis of more than 226,000 people worldwide showed that 4,000 steps were enough to start reducing the risk of premature death from any cause.
A little more than 2,300 are enough to have a healthy heart and blood vessels.
According to researchers, the more steps you take, the more health benefits are seen.
Every additional 1,000 steps beyond 4,000 reduces the risk of early death by 15 percent up to 20,000 steps.
The team from the Medical University of Lodz in Poland and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US found that the benefits of walking applied to all genders and ages, regardless of where they lived.
However, the greatest benefits were seen in those under 60.
Maciej Banach, from the University of Lodz, said that while the number of advanced drugs for treatment was increasing, they were not the only answer.
"I believe we should always emphasize that lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, which was the main hero of our analysis, can be at least as, or even more, effective in reducing cardiovascular risk and prolonging of life".
According to the World Health Organization, insufficient physical activity is responsible for 3.2 million deaths each year – the fourth most common cause worldwide.
Other benefits include improved mental health and significant time away from screens and other distractions.
