Australian singer Sia has confessed for the first time that she was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. A guest on Rob Cesternino's podcast, she said she felt a sense of liberation associated with understanding herself.

"For 45 years I felt like I had to wear a human costume, a mask. "Only in the last two years have I fully become myself," said the Australian singer.

"No one can know or love you when you are full of secrets and living in shame. It's only when we sit in a room full of strangers and tell them our deepest and darkest shame, and everyone laughs at us, and we don't feel like pieces of trash for the first time in our lives, that we feel seen for the first time in our lives for who we really are, we can start going out into the world and act as human beings with a heart and don't pretend to be anything," declared Sia.

In 2021, Sia found herself at the center of controversy for her debut film Music, which she directed, produced and wrote. The film centered on the story of an autistic girl.

Kate Hudson played a drug dealer who has to take care of her half-sister, Music, a non-verbal autistic child. Sia had cast Maddie Ziegler, an actress and dancer who collaborated on many of her videos, who was not on the autism spectrum, for the role. This decision upset many people, besides the fact that it portrayed diseases in a cartoonish way. ZIegler's interpretation was also considered a caricature. After receiving the attacks, Sia closed her Twitter account, promising to cut some of the scenes and including a message of awareness at the beginning of the film. The singer also apologized for not doing thorough research and consulting the wrong people about issues related to autism.
