The world's largest cylindrical aquarium explodes in Berlin

A giant aquarium holding a million liters of water in the lobby of the Radisson Blu in Berlin has exploded, flooding the hotel and nearby streets.

The AquaDom – home to 1,500 tropical fish and standing 14m high is the largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium in the world. Reuters reports that two people were slightly injured by shards of glass.

"About one million liters of water came out of the aquarium and spread inside the hotel and outside on the street due to the high pressure of the water inside the water tank. We asked the 350 people left in the hotel to pack their things and leave. Just chaos. The entire aquarium exploded and what is left is total destruction. Lots of dead fish, garbage. It's quite a drama," said Adrian Wentzel, head of the Berlin Fire Brigade

Images on social media showed extensive damage to the hotel lobby. The cause of the explosion is still unknown. In the footage published on social networks, the ground floor was filled with debris and search and rescue teams were deployed to evacuate people.

Emergency services closed a main road near the complex leading from Alexanderplatz to Berlin's Brandenburg Gate due to the large volume of water that had come out of the building.

Buses were sent to the complex to provide shelter for people who were in the hotel leaving the building, as the temperature in Berlin is around -7 degrees Celsius.

The aquarium was modernized two years ago and has an elevator for visitor use. Some of the rooms in the hotel have a view of it. "AquaDom" was opened in December 2003 and entered the Guinness Book as the largest aquarium in the world, while its construction cost about €12.8 million.
