A new study has found that growing boys ages their brains faster. More than 13,000 parents over the age of 50 participated in the study, which found that parents with at least one son age cognitively faster. It was also found that those who had more than one son lost their cognitive abilities faster than those who had only one daughter.

The study, led by researchers from the US and the Czech Republic, thinks that the reason parents of boys age faster is that boys tend to be less loving than girls, which could lead to worse mental health for parents of theirs.

Lower risk of dementia for those who have daughters

The study was conducted by asking parents to solve math problems and read them a list of words. At the beginning of the study, their intelligence levels were equal, but at the end of the study, the boys' parents were found to be less intelligent than at the beginning.

Researcher Katrin Wolfova from Columbia University in New York said:

"Parents with at least one son had a faster rate of cognitive decline compared to parents who had no sons. We observed similar trends in mothers as in fathers, so the results indicate that the effects are more social than biological."

In turn, the researchers suggested that because girls provide more emotional and social support than boys, they tend to be informal caregivers, which may play a key role.

In conclusion, the researchers noted that there are benefits to having a daughter. It has been noted that the health and depression benefits of having a daughter may contribute to reducing the risk of dementia.
