Jeton Sylaj, the ex-husband of Arlinda Zekaj, to whom the Basic Court in Peja has ordered a month of detention, has opposed this security measure, arguing that he needs to take care of his 12-year-old son.
During the hearing held on Tuesday, Sylaj stated before the court that he does not know where his child is and that he needs his father's care.
The court's decision states that Sylaj has also opposed the detention order on the grounds that he is unable to leave the country, as he does not possess travel documents.
"The defendant Jeton Sylaj stated: I oppose the proposed detention measure, the reason I oppose it is that I have a minor child aged 12 who I do not know where he is now, he needs my care," the court's decision states.
He also spoke about his travel documents, saying that the investigative authorities had taken his American passport, while the deceased, according to him, had taken his Kosovo passport.
"As my defense attorney stated, the investigative bodies have my American passport, while my deceased spouse took my Kosovo passport, and without documents I have nowhere to go, I have nowhere to go beyond my home," Sylaj stated.
In the same session, he expressed regret for the tragic event, claiming that he had tried to prevent the murder of Arlinda Zekaj, for which his brother, Albert Sylaj, who has already been detained, is suspected.
"I feel sorry for what happened, I tried to prevent it," he is quoted as saying before the jury.
However, according to the Prosecution's file, Sylaj admitted to the prosecutor that he had addressed threatening words to his ex-wife.
According to the same documents, he justified his actions by saying he had taken them in defense of their 12-year-old son.
