A record turnout of 77% was recorded in the 26th parliamentary (Knesset) elections in Israel, which took place yesterday.

The 600,000 "double envelope" votes, reserved for military personnel, reservists, diplomats, prisoners, hospitalized patients and others who cannot vote at their polling stations, will be decisive.

According to foreign media, these votes will be counted later, as well as those won by the "Joint List", the group of Arab factions.

The race is close between two blocs of parties, the right-wing ones, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the opposition party, the coalition led by Gadi Eisenkot.

According to the Central Election Commission, the bloc led by Netanyahu and the Likud party, according to the projection so far when 57% of the votes have been counted, leads with 55 seats in Parliament, compared to 49 seats for the opposition party.

Meanwhile, the result of the Arab-Israeli parties was also surprising, which, according to the projection, will reach 16 mandates.

So far, none of the parties has managed to form a single government, and it remains to be seen which side the Arab-Israeli parties will take.

Opposition leader Eisenkot had a direct message for Netanyahu, asking him to resign.

"A worthy leader would have resigned," Eisenkot said to Netanyahu.

On the other hand, Netanyahu has started the celebrations, but at the same time says he is waiting for the final results.

For US President Donald Trump, Netanyahu's lead in the election is related to the support he gave him during the election campaign.

Exit polls before the vote count began showed the two coalitions tied, but as the count continued, the prime minister's bloc gained the lead.
