The video game sector has always been open to new technologies. The use of Artificial Intelligence for their creation will be increased. What changes will this bring?
"In the utopia I have for Artificial Intelligence everything is more creative. We will have beautiful digital experiences. We will collaborate more with each other. This is possible. We just have to do it right, " says Sasha MacKinnon, founder and CEO of Mino Games. He was born in Australia and is known as a Pokémon-Nerd. He has been creating games since the age of six. His enthusiasm is contagious. His face lights up with joy. when it begins to show what possibilities the use of Artificial Intelligence, AI for short, brings in the development of games.
He is not the only enthusiast. A study published in September 2023 by consulting firm Bain & Company shows that the majority of game industry executives who were asked said that the next five to ten years will introduce Artificial Intelligence into the game creation process. .
IA brings the "magic moment"
At Sasha MacKinnon's studio, where the role-playing game Dimensionals is currently being worked on, AI is put to use via a charming, slightly crazy guy, boiling with ideas, who often sits at the conference table and makes suggestions many, which make others laugh. AI can for example generate characters, battles and dialogue. "We use AI to have the magic moment, where the characters say something that is not expected of them and that is not part of the script, but that's based on how they've been played so far."
However, AI reaches its limits very quickly. 40 to 50 percent of suggestions are unusable, says Sasha MacKinnon. At Mino Games, the Artificial Intelligence is the charming creative guy, giving ideas to be implemented by hand. That's how the sample sketches that appear in "Dimensionals" are created by an AI, but the samples that appear later in the game are created by human designers. So game creators don't have to fear for their jobs, he says. Sasha MacKinnon. They can't be replaced by AI. "Games are, in my opinion, the purest form of human creation, because they not only mix story with art and music, they create a human experience. IA will never be able to do such a thing.”
AI increases job insecurity
Daniel Landes does not support this optimism. He works as a freelance translator and does the German language adaptation of international games, among which "Hogwarts Legacy" or "Overwatch 2". The translator's work is usually paid on a royalty basis for each word translated. No one gets rich from this job. If the client decides to use AI translation tools, then the royalties, which are still low, will receive further reductions of up to 30 percent of the original price.
Translators will use AI translation tools like mathematicians use the calculator, explains Daniel Landes. "The main problem is that we will be forced to work for less money, although AI has not been proven to make translation work easier." Because the more complex a text is, the worse the machine translation works and the more correction work needs to be done.
"The machine does not understand the context, it only calculates the possibilities," says Daniel Landes. "Exactly in dialogues and creative texts, the job is not to translate word for word, but to capture the meaning of the original. AI is not capable of doing this.”
The parent association of audiovisual translators of Europe (AVTE) has published a manifesto on the topic of machine translation in 2021, in which Daniel Landes also participated. Its compilers warn of the dangers of losing quality in translation, question the efficiency of translation tools and demand fair fees for translators.
So far no improvement in general conditions has been seen. "Since most translators work as freelancers, it is very difficult to organize them. Many translators have to struggle to make ends meet."
The situation of translators is not only bad in Germany. "All translators in the world are under pressure," says Daniel Landes. "We see the same problems everywhere: Our names are not included in the subtitles, translation prices are lowered, and we have no right to speak or right to negotiate."
IA does not improve automatically
AI is only as good as the data it feeds on. In addition, it is not certain that IA improves over time. It can even get worse, as researchers have seen in the case of ChatGPT. So it's not wrong to think that the quality of games stagnates when AI is heavily used. But since technology often becomes cheaper than human labor very quickly, game designers and text compilers will put the technology to use, which can cause people to lose their jobs and studios to accept a drop in quality. gaming as the lesser evil.
"One of the biggest dangers of AI is that people get carried away," says game creator Sasha MacKinnon. "We're at a crossroads. AI can be the best thing we can have, or it can really hurt people.” We should not trust AI without limit, but we should use it as a tool for example to find inspiration. And AI should encourage people to create their own level in games, their stories and their games. Now a wave of games is expected to appear created by people who have never developed a game before, but who thanks to technological possibilities are able to do so.
The most successful games of recent years have been created because existing games have been modified and further developed by the community, that is, by the players themselves, not by the industry. "Counter-Strike" was created from the modification of the shooter game "Half-Life". "Fortnite" is the comic variant of "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" (PUBG), whose Battle-Royale concept is that 100 players fight against each other and the game the last one standing wins - a concept that was created by a modder, that is, someone who adapts games by creating a new level and a new map.
Quantity over quality: AI enables game creation
One of the possible future scenarios is that through the use of AI more games are created, but the quality drops and more boring, uninteresting games are released. From now on, about 30 new games appear on the Steam gaming platform every day.
In addition, through AI, which can take over the tasks of game creation, from graphics to text creation and programming, it will be much easier to develop a game.
Thus the next few years will see the creation of more user-generated content, which may eventually create new and successful genres. After all, the technical possibilities, which were limited at the beginning, have greatly influenced the development of games: starting with text adventures in the 1980s, highly detailed Open World games in 3D optics in the 2000s, to games current favorite online multiplayer.
