Should we turn off the computer at night or just put it on standby?

A survey conducted by Panda Security, a company that produces one of the most popular antivirus programs in the world, found that only 37% of users turn off their computer every night, compared to 63% who keep it on, albeit in ways different: some put it in standby, some in sleep, some in hibernation and even 23% keep it on all the time, thus causing a series of problems. But what is the difference between turning off the device until the next day and leaving it on in one of the ways listed?

Let's start from an assumption: keeping the computer on at night, or in any case practically never turning it off, is highly inadvisable for reasons of wear, functionality and IT security. In addition to saving on the bill, turning it off extends the life of electronic components, which are subject to a form of aging mainly influenced by their operating temperature.

In fact, a desktop computer can consume from 100 to 500 Wh (if you have, for example, large monitors and an acceleration card), while a laptop from 20 to 60 Wh. Describing as inappropriate the idea of keeping our PC always on all the time, further hypotheses between standby, sleep and hibernation modes, which have a consumption between 1-5 and 0 Wh, remain to be was investigated.

Basically, the use of these modes can translate into a few extra euros per year on the bill, although it is estimated that the consumption of all standby devices in the world is about 10% of the total.

Therefore, with these figures, the choice of whether the computer will be on or off at night mainly depends on its use. As a general rule, if you are not using it as a server, if you are doing a backup or a system update, or you need to access it remotely, it is best to turn off the machine to save sensitive data on it and also to rest components. The programs we use every day aren't written perfectly, and the longer you keep your computer on, the more you run the risk of malfunctions or crashes. Turning it off at least once every two to three days is a good habit to avoid problems.
