In an election race with record turnout, the independent centrist candidate and current mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, is expected to be elected the new president of Romania.

According to the first exit polls, Dan won with 55% of the votes, leaving behind the far-right candidate, George Simion, who received 45%.

Sunday's presidential election marked a high civic engagement, with a turnout of 64.5%, significantly higher than that of the first round, which was 53%.

In his first speech after the publication of the preliminary results, Dan congratulated the citizens for their determination and for the election which, according to him, reflects democratic maturity and the desire for change. "Romanians chose dialogue over hatred," he said, stressing the need for deep reforms and a more institutionally stable society.

The official results are expected to be published by the Central Election Authority in the coming hours.
