Pope Leo XIV broke protocol and hugged his brother Louis during his greetings to the delegations at the end of the inauguration ceremony. After shaking hands with JD Vance and Marco Rubio, brother Louis approached the Pope and exchanged hugs with each other.

In a homily delivered at his inaugural Mass, Pope Leo XIV set out priorities recalling those of his predecessor, Francis, while calling for unity within his church at a time of threatened divisions in the US and beyond.

"I would like our first great desire to be a united church, a sign of unity and communion, which becomes the yeast for a reconciled world," he said.

About 200,000 believers attended the inauguration ceremony of Pope Leo XIV, who was elected after the death of Pope Francis.
