Former FBI Director James Comey has been interviewed by the US Secret Service after he shared and then deleted a social media post that Republicans deemed incitement to violence against US President Donald Trump.
Comey voluntarily participated in questioning for about an hour at the law enforcement agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C., and was not taken into custody.
This comes a day after he posted a photo of seashells on Instagram with the numbers "8647" written on them.
The number 86 is a slang term whose definitions include “to reject” or “to get rid of.” However, it has recently been used as a term meaning “to kill.”
Donald Trump is the 47th president of the United States.
Trump said earlier in the day during an interview with Fox News that Comey, whom he fired as FBI director in 2017, was calling for him to be killed.
“He knew exactly what that meant,” said Trump, who survived two assassination attempts on him last year. “Even a child knows what that meant.”
"If you're the director of the FBI and you don't know what that would mean? That would mean murder. And he says that loud and clear."
Just James Comey causally calling for my father to be murdered.

Trump said any decision on whether to file charges against Comey would depend on Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Comey posted the photo of the seashells on Thursday and then deleted it amid conservative uproar.
He wrote in a follow-up Instagram message that he had seen the shells during a walk on the beach, "which I didn't assume were a political message."
"I didn't know that some people associate these numbers with violence. It never occurred to me, but I'm against violence of any kind, so I removed the post."
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on X on Friday night that the Secret Service had "interviewed former fired FBI Director Comey regarding a social media post calling for the assassination of President Trump."
“I will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure the protection of President Trump,” she added. “This is an ongoing investigation.”
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, the highest-ranking spy chief in the US, previously called for Comey to be jailed for "attacking" Trump while he was traveling in the Middle East.
