Unlike Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV is expected to live in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the head of the Catholic Church. According to Vatican officials, the building contains the papal apartments, various offices of the Holy See, private and public chapels, the Vatican Museum and Library, a study, a dining room, a kitchen and a chapel.
Work is currently underway to renovate the palace and the Holy Father is expected to move in shortly after his inauguration mass as Pope on Sunday.
Francis was the first pope since 1870 not to live in a palace, choosing instead to make his residence the Vatican's Santa Marta Hotel, a facility that houses priests and other Vatican guests while eschewing luxury and opting for simple surroundings.
Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, May 18, a Mass will be held in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican to mark the beginning of the papacy of Pope Leo XIV, with more than 200 leaders from around the world expected to attend.
