The execution of the chief Greek mobster,  Vangelis Zampounis,  with almost 100 bullets came as a reminder that the war within the Greek mafia continues unabated.

In the turbulent course of the dark life of Vangelis Zampounis , the great love of his life, Katerina Anagnostaki, known as " Katerina Bella Mafia " , played an important role .

"An impressive woman who was always attracted to the mobster, with whom she lived a passionate romance for a long time, before they parted amicably. But even after their separation, they communicated very often, of course not knowing that after 2016, when the Greek mafia war broke out, they would become prime targets to be eliminated by their opponents. Katerina Anagnostaki was the first to be executed, when she thought she had gotten out of the Greek mafia for good."

Love with the godfather

Katerina Bella Mafia, loved the good life, guns and tattoos. She was originally from Crete and came from a wealthy family, growing up with all the comforts.

She was still young when she believed that because of her name, connections and social status she would always be invulnerable and protected.

At the age of 20, she met and fell in love with Vangelis Zampounis. Even the chief Greek mobster fell in love, deciding to leave the mafia world to get away from difficult situations, but that never happened.

He even involved his girlfriend in the dark world of the Greek mafia. When he was in danger of being arrested, she hid him in her apartment, committing the first illegality.

She was then suspected of a mafia murder, for which she was found not guilty. He was also accused of being part of a bank robbery gang.

For this specific case, she received a 5-year suspended prison sentence. Then the first assassination happened from her. In 2011, when two men with bangs were waiting for her on Veikou Avenue in Galatsi where she was working.

The assassins shot her in the head and left, leaving her seriously injured, at a time when she was also pregnant. The event happened when Katerina was only 26 years old.

She is rushed to the hospital and doctors fight to keep her alive and save the child who is now 12 years old.

Anagnostaki can survive and come out after months of hospitalization. It was then that she reportedly left for America with her daughter for several years, something her family denies.

After the assassination, she had changed a lot and seemed to have distanced herself from the Greek mafia. He decided to live a normal life in Athens. Except someone had not forgotten her or her deeds in the country, where since 2016 the executions in Athens have increased and increased month by month.

On September 20, 2018, around midnight, the charming 33-year-old with black hair was returning in her Mercedes to the luxury apartment complex where she lived, in Kifissia. 

She had an app on her mobile phone that allowed her to see the cameras in the underground car park where she parked her car, as she had recently received several threatening messages.

After seeing that everything was in order, she got in and went down to the parking lot, not noticing the "shadows" that were walking quickly behind her, armed with Kalashnikovs. With a barrage of Kalashnikov "Katerina Bella Mafia" was executed.

Three months ago, in an Instagram post, she wrote: " First come the smiles, then the lies and finally the bullets ," a phrase that proved prophetic, accompanied by a photo of herself pointing an automatic weapon at the target.

After Katerina, it was the turn of the head mobster Greg, Zampounis, to be eliminated. He escaped an assassination attempt in Piraeus in 2018, only because the Kalashnikov of the assassins jammed, in this assassination attempt he escaped with only a leg wound.

Almost four years later, Zampounis, who usually traveled with an escort while wearing a bulletproof vest, reportedly received assurances that he was no longer in danger.

As the leader of the Greek mafia, he may have believed that the problems were closed, causing him to remove the escort and move only in armored vehicles.

This prompted opponents to hit him when he lowered his guard by executing him with more than 100 bullets in an assassination attempt in the early hours of Sunday./ Protothema
