Venice has delayed the introduction of visitor fees as the city council has not yet fully approved the new ticketing process, the mayor's spokesman Luigi Bruniaro announced today.

In an effort to control the huge crowds caused by tourists, officials announced in July that from January 16, 2023, everyone coming to Venice for that day will have to book their visit online and pay between three to to 10 euros to enter the city, reports Reuters.

The mayor's spokesman, however, said the city council has yet to pass the necessary regulations, meaning the date for the introduction and collection of tickets will be postponed.

He added that the whole process will take at least six months.

The plan to impose entrance fees was first introduced in 2019, but its implementation was initially postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to a decrease in the number of tourists.

This year the flow of tourists to Venice has increased and the number of foreigners who come often exceeds the 50,000 residents living in the city center.

This has brought large crowds to the city's narrow streets, so the issue of charging daily tickets is again on the mayor's agenda.
