The US Air Force Chief of Staff warns that the US military must change if it wants to maintain its edge against China and Russia. The general spoke this week with VOA correspondent Carla Babb to discuss how the Air Force is adapting to changing threats around the globe.
While the United States was focused on the fight against Islamist extremists in Afghanistan and the Middle East, Russia and China gradually increased their military power.
Russia is already flexing its military muscle in neighboring Ukraine, while the Pentagon considers China the biggest threat to national security.
Speaking exclusively to VOA, General CQ Brown Jr., chief of staff of the Air Force, warned that the United States should not be complacent with the current situation if it wishes to continue to be the world's greatest superpower.
"Our adversaries have continued to advance their capabilities, while we are using the same capabilities we have been using for the past 30 years. The risk we face will not be the risk we will face in the future. Therefore, we must definitely change", says General Brown.
China has more active-duty military personnel than the United States and has invested for decades in upgrading its weaponry. Over the past few years, the Chinese military has produced new aircraft carriers, new jets and a massive arsenal of missiles.
But while China spent about $250 billion on its military in 2022, the United States spent nearly eight times as much.
"It is right to acknowledge the progress of these potential adversaries, but that fact alone should not create panic in the United States. We're still relatively capable — the best military forces in the world," says Melanie Sisson, of the Brookings Institution.
Veteran and defense analyst Bradley Bowman notes that China has methodically and deliberately chosen modernizations designed to defeat the United States in East Asia, a potential battleground because of Taiwan.
This could leave American ports and bases exposed to Chinese attacks.
"The Chinese have created capacities as good as ours, sometimes even better. "America's military advantage in the Pacific has waned, and I see China advancing rapidly, while often we here in Washington seem to be napping," says Mr. Bowman.
The US Air Force will unveil its newest stealth bomber, the B-21, next month. It will replace the B-1 and B-2 bombers, which have been in use since the 1980s.
"That's why we need to modernize, as there are some aircraft that are more difficult from the point of view of maintenance, while the resources for replacement parts are decreasing. With modernization, the number of available aircraft increases and we ensure that we have the readiness of the forces", says General Brown.
Preparing for something US officials hope never happens. They say China aims to achieve the capabilities to take and hold Taiwan by 2027. China has also announced that it aims to become a world-class military force "to fight and win" by 2049.
