OJ Simpson, former football player and former American actor, has passed away at the age of 76, his family has announced.

“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this period of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy," his family said in a statement.

OJ Simpson was charged but then eventually acquitted of the brutal murders of his ex-wife and her lover in 1994.

Although Simpson was found not guilty in the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, three years after his criminal trial he was found guilty in a civil lawsuit filed by the victims' families.

On June 12, 1994, his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her boyfriend Ronald Goldman were found murdered outside her Brentwood apartment.

Simpson, who had been accused of domestic violence several times, was declared a person of interest in the case and charges were brought against him. But instead of giving up, it all turned into a televised spectacle when he tried to escape in his white Ford Bronco as the police gave chase.

The follow-up, which was broadcast "live" on television, attracted an audience of about 95 million people.

He was never convicted of the double murder, as his defense claimed evidence was tampered with by police, and that the investigation was racially motivated.
