Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, a member of the Academy of Earth Sciences in Turkey, who on February 3 expressed concern for the Kahramanmaraşin region after a 4.2 Richter earthquake, has already raised concern for the Marmara region.
In an interview for a television station in Turkey, Görür raised concerns about Istanbul.
He said that this city is scary and there is no security for more than 400 thousand people. He refers to two companies that have done studies, saying that 75% of the buildings in Istanbul would not withstand another earthquake.
"More than 400,000 people do not have life insurance. Do you think the building quality is better than in Kahramanmaraş? Istanbul should prepare for an earthquake. He is not prepared. It is necessary that we do this as soon as possible. Istanbul scares us. The chance of a major earthquake anytime until 2029 is 62 percent.
More than 5,000 people have died as a result of dozens of powerful earthquakes that hit Turkey on Monday, the two strongest were 7.8 and 7.7 Richter.
