President-elect Donald Trump appears to have sided with billionaire businessman Elon Musk and his tech industry supporters in the debate within Republicans over the H-1B visa program for skilled workers.

In an interview with the New York Post newspaper on Saturday, Mr. Trump supported the use of these visas to bring skilled foreign workers to the United States.

On Friday evening, Mr. Musk, head of Tesla and SpaceX, pledged to firmly defend the H-1B visa program, referring to the technology industry.

In a post on the social media platform X, Mr. Musk wrote that: "The reason I am in America along with so many vital people, who built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that made America strong, is the H1B visa program."

"I will fight for this issue, which you cannot understand," he added.

The topic has become a hot point of debate within the conservative Republican base.

"I've always liked visas and I've always been in favor of them. That's why we have them," Mr. Trump said.

In the past, Mr. Trump has used these visas in his businesses, something he also acknowledged during Saturday's interview.

"I have a lot of people with these visas on my properties. I have faith in them. I have used them many times. It is a wonderful program," Mr. Trump told the newspaper.

But he did not say whether there would be any change in the number of visas of this type that would be granted after he takes office on January 20.

Mr. Trump's hardline immigration policies, focused primarily on immigrants who are in the country illegally, were a cornerstone of his presidential campaign and a priority issue for his supporters.

Software engineers and others working in the technology industry have used H-1B visas for skilled foreign workers. They say they are a vital tool to fill hard-to-fill positions. But critics say they undervalue the American citizens who could fill those jobs. Some conservative Republicans have called for the program to be ended./Voice of America
