An Italian tourist has died after being attacked by a shark in the Red Sea in Egypt.

The serious incident occurred in the tourist area of Marsa Alam, where two people were submerged in the sea. The other person, whose identity is unknown, was injured in the shark attack.

The Qusair Prosecutor's Office reports that the Egyptian Ministry of Environment has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident and has suspended sea bathing in the meantime.

There are sharks in the Red Sea but attacks are relatively rare. The Egyptian ministry said the attack took place in deep waters outside the designated bathing area near the ports north of Marsa Alam, adding that swimming outside the ports was prohibited and that they would remain closed for two days starting Monday.
