Plane catches fire as it skids on runway

Passengers were left in a state of shock at a Canadian airport after a plane skidded off the runway and burst into flames. Fortunately, only minor injuries were reported.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport was closed Saturday night after an Air Canada flight from St. Johns caught fire when its wheels failed to deploy properly during landing, CBC reported.

"We need to get out," they are heard saying in the video published in the Daily Mail.

A passenger on Air Canada Flight 2259 described the terrifying event.

Nikki Valentine told CBC: The plane started to bank about 20 degrees to the left and we heard a pretty loud noise – almost like a crashing sound – as the wing of the plane started to slide along the pavement, along with what I assume was the engine. The plane shook a lot and we started to see fire on the left side of the plane and smoke started coming out the window.

After the plane stopped, Valentini said it took about two minutes for everyone to get off the plane — which was partially engulfed in flames at that point. Passengers went to a bus after exiting the plane.

Shocking footage shows the plane on fire as one of its wings drags on the runway, creating a loud screaming sound.

"One side of the entire plane was on fire, so everyone was in a hurry to get off, but an organized hurry," she told CBC.

Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick told the Toronto Star that the flight "suspected there was a problem with the landing gear," but none of the 73 passengers were seriously injured.

A spokesman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which responded to the scene, said minor injuries were reported.

One of the airport's runways has reopened since the accident, while the incident is being investigated to determine exactly what happened.

The Air Canada plane malfunction came just hours after a South Korean passenger plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a concrete wall, killing at least 177 people.
