United States President Donald Trump has signed his historic policy bill into law, just a day after it was narrowly passed by Congress.
The signing event implements key parts of Trump's agenda, including cutting taxes, increasing defense spending and cracking down on immigration.
Trump told his supporters that this would boost economic growth, but now he must convince skeptical Americans, as polls show many of them do not approve of the bill, the BBC reports.
Some members of his Republican party opposed it because of the impact on the US debt, and Democrats warned that the bill would reward the rich and punish the poor.
The 870-page draft law includes:
-extending the 2017 tax cuts of Trump's first term
-major cuts to Medicaid spending, the state-provided health care scheme for low-income and disabled people
-new tax breaks for tip income, overtime and Social Security
-a $150 billion budget increase for defense
-a reduction in Biden-era clean energy tax credits
-$100 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
In a speech from the White House balcony overlooking the South Lawn, Trump thanked Republican lawmakers who helped bring the bill to his desk. He praised the tax cuts in the bill, while brushing aside criticism of the impact on social programs like food assistance and Medicaid.
“The biggest spending cut, though, you won’t even notice,” he said of the bill. “People are happy.”
Additionally, Trump praised the additional resources being given to border and immigration law enforcement and the elimination of taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security for seniors, which he says will be accomplished through legislation.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the bill an "extraordinary attack on the health care of the American people" and cited testimony from individuals concerned about its impact.
According to the Tax Policy Center, the tax changes in the bill would benefit wealthier Americans more than lower-income earners. Its analysis found that about 60% of the benefits would go to those earning over $217,000 (£158,000).
