High speed, a flat tire and uneven asphalt are suspected to be the main factors that led to the tragic accident that killed Diogo Jota, the star of Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, and his brother, André Silva, also a footballer.
The two brothers were in a rented Lamborghini Huracán, which went off the road and burst into flames after one of the rear tires exploded during an overtaking maneuver on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, in Zamora (Spain).
According to Spanish media, Jota had chosen to travel by car rather than by plane for medical reasons. He had recently recovered from lung surgery and, due to the risk associated with changes in air pressure, doctors advised him to avoid flying.
The two brothers were headed to Santander, where they would take the 4pm ferry to Portsmouth (England). From there, Jota would travel to Liverpool to join the team's training session on Tuesday.
The A-52 motorway, which connects Galicia with Portugal, has long been criticized for its poor condition. In April last year, dozens of complaints were reported about the infrastructure, and just ten days ago, a woman was seriously injured in the same area where Jota's accident occurred.
According to the Guardia Civil, the collision occurred during an overtaking manoeuvre, where the vehicle's speed is believed to have been above the 120 km/h limit. Investigations to determine the exact speed and road conditions are still ongoing.
Rute Cardoso, the wife of Diogo Jota, has arrived at the Institute of Forensic Anatomy in Zamora, where the bodies have been sent for DNA identification. She and the couple's three children were part of the wedding that took place just 12 days ago in Porto.
Authorities have provided psychological support to Rute and her family.
The funeral of the two brothers will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 10:00 am, at the Gondomar Cathedral, near their hometown of Porto. Tributes began today at the Capela da Ressurreição, where dozens of people affected by the tragedy are saying goodbye to the two young men who left their mark on Portuguese football and beyond.
