German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has rejected calls to fly the LGBT flag over the Bundestag on July 26, Christopher Street Day. He said the German parliament is not “a circus tent.”
In an interview with German media, Merz supported the previous decision of Parliament Speaker Julia Klöckner to reject this request.
"On all other days, the German flag and the European flag fly in the German Bundestag and no other. And this decision is the right one ," he said, adding that the rainbow flag should only be flown on the International Day Against Homophobia.
In June of this year, Klöckner decided that the rainbow flag would not be flown from the parliament building. Among other things, she ordered members of the administration not to participate in the parade.
These statements caused outrage among opposition MPs. The government commissioner for LGBT rights and MP from the Social Democratic Party accused Merz of being treated like a circus animal.
Green-led lawmakers also staged a protest in the Bundestag hall.
In past years, the Bundestag has flown the flag during community events, and previous chancellors have participated in Christopher Street Day celebrations.
