Catastrophic flooding in Texas! At least 24 dead, 25 girls from summer camp
TEXAS

Severe weather has hit the state of Texas on US Independence Day, with flash floods causing at least 24 deaths, while 25 girls from a summer camp are still missing.

US President Donald Trump described the incident as "shocking" and "horrific", while federal authorities have promised emergency assistance. Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed that search and rescue operations are continuing without interruption, although the exact number of missing people has not yet been officially confirmed.

The Guadalupe River rose 8 meters in 45 minutes, taking away property and, unfortunately, lives. The summer camp "Camp Mystic", where dozens of girls were staying, is one of the areas hardest hit by the flooding.

The rescue operation involves 14 helicopters, 12 drones, 9 search and rescue teams, as well as 400–500 field personnel, including divers and tactical military vehicles.

According to Major General Thomas Suelzer, 237 people have been rescued so far, while authorities are facing communication disruptions in the hardest-hit areas, which is further complicating efforts to contact the girls' camp.

In Kerr County, where the worst of the flooding occurred, authorities have been criticized for the lack of a warning system, but said the flooding was far more severe than any predictions and even surpassed the magnitude of the tragic 1987 flood that killed 10 teenagers.

Warnings of new flooding continue, as officials report that the region has received months' worth of rain in a matter of hours.

Meanwhile, the tragedy has not only affected Texas, in New Jersey, three people lost their lives after severe storms and heavy rainfall, where two men were killed by a tree that fell on their car and a 44-year-old woman lost her life under similar circumstances.
