At least five people died in Oklahoma and thousands were left without power due to powerful tornadoes. A four-month-old child is among those who lost their lives.
Sulphur, a town of about 5,000 south of Oklahoma City, is the hardest hit. A major highway on the Texas border was closed due to overturned vehicles and downed power lines. Dozens of houses were destroyed across the state.
Hospitals across the state reported about 100 people injured, according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management. Governor Stitt declared a state of emergency in 12 counties hit by the severe storm. Despite the numerous storms, parts of Oklahoma are also dealing with drought. The cities of Holdenville and Marietta were also heavily damaged.
The authorities announced that the affected areas would recover. US President Joe Biden has offered the federal government's full support to the people. On Friday alone, 78 tornadoes were reported, mostly in Nebraska and Iowa, and another 35 were reported in northern Texas and Missouri.
