WikiLeaks founder freed after pleading guilty to espionage charges

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been freed after pleading guilty to violating the US Espionage Act, a deal that would have ended his imprisonment in Britain and allowed him to return to Australia, ending an odyssey of legal term.

The 52-year-old Assange has agreed to plead guilty to only one criminal charge, that of conspiracy to obtain and publish classified US defense documents, according to the court filing.

In a post on the X network, formerly known as Twitter, Wikilekas said Assange left Belmarsh prison on Monday and left Britain on a private jet the same afternoon. "After the hearing, he will return to Australia," the statement said.

Assange is expected to be sentenced to 62 months in prison, which he has already served. The hearing against him is expected to be held on Wednesday in Saipan, the largest island in the Northern Mariana Islands, a US territory.

After the hearing, he is expected to return home to Australia. A legal representative for Mr Assange declined to comment.

In 2020 Wikileaks released hundreds of thousands of secret US military documents on Washington's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the largest leak of its kind in US military history.

US prosecutors say Assange, 52, encouraged and helped former US military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning steal diplomatic cables and military files that WikiLeaks published, putting lives at risk.

Julian Assange's legal troubles began in 2010, when he was arrested in London at the request of Sweden, which wanted to question him about allegations of rape and sexual assault made by two women. In 2012 he breached bail rules by failing to appear in court, which had decided to allow his extradition to Sweden, and sought refuge inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where British authorities had no authority to intervene. He stayed there for 7 years to avoid extradition to Sweden.

His relationship with his Ecuadorian hosts deteriorated and he was expelled from the embassy in April 2019. British police immediately arrested him and imprisoned him in Belmarsh. Since 2019 he has been in this high security prison and for almost 5 years he has been fighting to oppose extradition to the United States.

During the period of imprisonment in Belmarsh, Mr. Assange married his partner Stella with whom he had two children while he was isolated in the Ecuadorian embassy./VOA/
