The envoy of the United States of America for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, today, June 16, will hold an online conference with journalists. It is learned that the conference is expected to be held at 15:00, where the focus will be on the situation created in the north of Kosovo.

The tensions started on May 26, when the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north, under the assistance of the Kosovo Police, entered the municipal buildings, amid the opposition of the local Serbs.

Tensions culminated on May 29, when in Zveçan, Serbian protesters clashed with members of the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR. Dozens of people from both sides were injured in the clashes.

Also, on June 13, the Kosovo Police carried out an action in North Mitrovica, where they arrested Millun Millenkovic. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Xelal Sveçla, said that the arrested person is suspected of being one of the organizers of the events in Zveçan on May 29.

A day after that, three members of the Kosovo Police were arrested by Serbian forces in the north of the country, an action that the Government of Kosovo described as kidnapping.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, declared a day ago that no soldiers and no policemen from Serbia have entered across the border with Kosovo. He said that Serbian police arrested three Kosovo policemen 1.8 kilometers from the border.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, rejected the claims of Serbia, which said that the policemen of Kosovo had crossed the border and entered its territory.

Also, the Government of Kosovo announced that border controls with Serbia have been tightened. The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, declared that "our goal is security, and security starts at the borders".

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, has said on Thursday that he will invite the representatives of Kosovo and Serbia next week in Brussels, an urgent meeting for crisis management.
